The One Thing Technology Cannot Replace… is creativity
There is a treasure so rare God placed inside of every human being. It
is a defining element of Himself as our Creator, that is creativity. We are
created in His image, so it is unmistakable evident on the inside of every
person.
The advancement of technology has occurred at the speed of light which will never stop and will become more advanced with every invention, app, game or the newest smartphone on the market. Don’t get me wrong, we all enjoy the convenience of being able to set our phone while driving and speaking into Siri to direct our route to avoid traffic. Our lives have become extremely convenient in many ways.
Being a teacher in the creative arts and specializing in Visual Arts, the advancement of technology has become very beneficial to encouraging certain career choices to my learners. The field they will enter to become experts will be in the “Creative Industry”. Applying their creative skill to design an advert, a web page or sketching an animated character will be done on a specific computer programme. Sounds very sophisticated and intriguing….
Yet to be able to create/build an invention, what did Leonardo Da Vinci do? He had thousands of sketches with descriptions. He conceptualized for hours, drawing with his hand using a pencil on paper. Basic stuff, it evolved, developed and voila! He created a master invention.
The reason I am mentioning this is because I have come to realize, that we cannot ignore and suppress the importance of the human element on the inside of us. The artist inside of us that needs to create a new drawing, or a songwriter that needs to write a new song. A computer or an app cannot come up with something original. That element of the creative blueprint remains on the inside of us as human beings and cannot be replaced.
That is why it troubles me lately if I see how humans, young and old, have become consumed and almost swallowed up by technology. Its as if they have climbed into a simulated world that appears to be real, but actually isn’t. It is scary how people have become detached from what is important, a face to face conversation or eye contact. This could lead to an increase of passive behavior that will become a threat to developing the source of creativity on the inside of a person.
The answer to concerned parents whose teenager or youngster is continuously active on social media or their PlayStation, is to encourage them to develop their creativity. Learning an instrument or how to paint can bring a healthy balance to a child’s weekly routine and simultaneously develop their ability how to tap into their inner creative ideas. It will be healthier for their soul and spirit in the long run.
Let us return to where we started as children releasing the urge to create with crayons on paper without inhibitions. Or simply sketching our thoughts and ideas freely into a journal can be a liberating method of how to capture what God spoke to you about. Expressing, creating, growing, discovering and tapping into His heart pro-actively. Liberating a passive imagination and mind….there are many ideas and inventions still to be born.
